My conditions are Evernote 4.2.2.3913 under Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit SP2. I found newer version Evernote 4.2.3.2 available, manually downloaded and installed. Update/upgrade install required uninstalling the installed older version before install of the newer version.
(I have been using the built in update check successfully to get updates. This time Check for update reported "You already have the latest version". I did scan with Software Informer which reported newer version. I expected it was incorrect as in most cases, no newer version that applies to my setup or actually test version. But this time Software informer got it right and helped me in a case where the software's own update check did not work.)

Indeed, there were some issues with the Evernote client and the built-in update functionality. Luckily for you and other users, the developers fixed it. I have used Evernote since it appears and now it works normally. I use the built-in update function since it appeared ad never had any problems except the one you posted. Latest version of Evernote is now 5.8.3.6507. I can assure you that the built-in update function works as it should now.
